We live in a pretty messed up world.
A place where negativity thrives as social media dictates our minds. A place where popular culture promotes inappropriate and rude behavior. A place where we are constantly bombarded with reminders of evil.
And it’s only getting worse.
It seems like every time we begin to make steps forward we’re thrown back with the news of another terrorist attack or violent protest. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, it’s always present. We’re constantly being bombarded with negativity every single day; regardless of your personal or political beliefs.
And as a result we all become more cynical as we view these things in the media and in our lives.
I don’t know about you but as I have experienced these things I know that my mindset has become more and more negative, meaning my attitude has become more and more negative. The negativity from that spreads into other areas of my life and I’ve noticed that I am more critical of myself as a result. When I’m feeling bad, I look at the things that are going wrong in my life instead of focusing on my blessings- and that’s no way to live.
This is especially a problem with me on social media and it stems from two things: either 1) I spend time comparing myself, and the areas I feel I don’t measure up in, to others or 2) the pessimistic, bad attitudes and low morals shared through various means of social media get my attention and leave me feeling down and out about the world I’m raising my children in- especially in situations where people are fighting over the internet and saying the cruelest of things.
I love social media and it’s an amazing tool for good when used well, but when we use it to compare ourselves to others OR to push our agendas and bully others with no thought or reason aside from disagreeing with them, we’re using it incorrectly.
Somedays I wake up and think I’d like to shut myself off from social media, but if I’m doing that am I actually doing good?
Avoiding the problem isn’t making it better.
I have been given a great opportunity though, thanks to all of you- my lovely readers/followers.
Because of you I have a platform. I have people who view my posts and read what I share. I have people who like, retweet, comment, and interact with the things I put out into the world. And maybe some of you do too. I’m sure some of my awesome readers are bloggers, influencers, vloggers, etc.
With this platform I want to start spreading more positivity and light on social media. And here’s how I plan on doing it:
What it is:
Once a day for the next year I will be posting on Instagram (you can follow me here) about the blessings I’ve experienced that day. Whether they’re huge and life-changing, Earth-shattering blessings or just the small and simple things that keep me running and our life together.
Along with the Instagram post I’ll be using the hashtag #365DaysSoBlessed so that you (and I) can easily distinguish these posts from other posts.
You’re all invited to use this hashtag too and to share your blessings on Instagram (or Facebook, or Twitter!) using the tag. Every Friday I plan to share some of my favorite posts from this hashtag.
I’m really excited about this little hashtag campaign. I’m hoping that through it I’ll gain higher awareness of the blessings that are all around me everyday. I also hope to bring a little more light and goodness to Instagram. To break up the negativity that can come from social media and to encourage us all to look around and see the goodness, positivity and light that we all have.
Even if our lives aren’t exactly Insta-worthy or we’re not getting 1000 likes.
Ultimately though, I want to give glory to God. He has blessed my life in countless ways and I want to share that explicitly with my friends and followers.
So whether or not you participate, I hope that you’ll follow along and would encourage you to look outside of yourself to see the blessings you’ve been given.
